Free to ask · No obligation · Both sides

Ask a solicitor about your situation

Say which side you are on and what has happened. A solicitor who handles defamation cases, for people who have been defamed and for people, shops and employers accused of it, will contact you. The free routes come first on this site; this page is for when they are not enough.

Frequently asked questions

How much does this cost?

Asking is free and carries no obligation. If you engage the solicitor, their fees are agreed between you and them, and they must give you a written costs notice under section 150 of the Legal Services Regulation Act 2015. No solicitor pays DefamationWise for introductions, which section 62 of the Solicitors Act 1954 forbids: a sponsoring firm pays a fixed fee that does not depend on your enquiry. See how this site earns on the disclosure page.

Who will see my details?

Only DefamationWise and the solicitor firm. The form collects which side you are on, your name, email, what it is about, where it stands, how you want to be contacted, and a phone number only if you give one or ask for a call. Nothing about the statement itself is collected. You can ask for deletion at any time.

What happens next?

Your enquiry reaches the solicitor within a minute. They contact you, usually within one business day, the way you asked. Whether you go further is your call.

Should I try the free routes first?

Often, yes. A platform notice, a written request to the author, a complaint to the Press Ombudsman or a broadcaster, and Google delisting cost nothing and end many disputes. The route finder puts them in order for your situation. A solicitor is for when they are not enough, the clock is short, the author is anonymous, or a letter has arrived.

I am being threatened or harassed. Is this the right form?

No. Threats, harassment and sharing intimate images are crimes, not defamation. If you are in danger call 999 or 112. Report to An Garda Síochána, and to Hotline.ie for intimate images. Samaritans are on 116 123, free, at any hour.

Can I get legal aid for defamation?

No. Defamation is excluded from civil legal aid under section 28(9) of the Civil Legal Aid Act 1995, with a narrow EU cross-border exception. Solicitors may not charge a percentage of damages. Ask for the written costs notice before anything is issued.

Information, not legal advice. Rules, thresholds and court practice change, and no page here can say whether a particular statement is defamatory. DefamationWise is an independent site, not affiliated with the Courts Service, the Press Ombudsman, Coimisiún na Meán, An Garda Síochána or any Government department. It covers the Republic of Ireland only. For decisions about your own situation, speak to a solicitor regulated by the Law Society of Ireland.
