About DefamationWise
Last updated 2026-10-09.
DefamationWise is an independent information site for people in the Republic of Ireland on either side of a defamation problem: the person who believes they have been defamed, and the person, shop, employer or small business who has been accused of it. It explains what counts as defamation, what can be done without a solicitor, the one-year time limit, what courts have actually awarded, what a case costs and risks, and when to speak to a solicitor.
Who is behind it
DefamationWise is published by Codable Labs Ltd, an Irish company, and is part of the StampWise family of independent guides alongside StampWise.ie (Irish immigration), DivorceWise.ie and SettleWise. It is not a law firm and is not affiliated with the Courts Service, the Press Ombudsman, Coimisiún na Meán, An Garda Síochána or any Government department.
How the content is kept honest
- Every guide names the Act or official page it comes from and shows the date it was last checked.
- Every tool reads its rules from a versioned configuration file with its own source list; nothing is hard-coded in a page. Rules whose wording could not be checked against the Act itself are marked as awaiting that check.
- Cost figures are planning assumptions and are labelled as such. Awards are reported cases with a dated source, never predictions.
- A weekly check flags any guide or configuration that has not been verified in 90 days.
- Commenced law, enacted-but-uncommenced law and announced plans are kept apart on the rule-change tracker.
What the site will not do
- It gives no legal advice and never says whether a particular statement is defamatory.
- It never names a person or business a reader describes, never reproduces a statement a reader pastes, hosts no comments or stories, and does not comment on live cases.
- It sells no letters or documents: the notice builder is free, generic and in the reader’s own words, and there is no letter-before-action product.
- It takes no payment that varies with introductions to a solicitor, and carries no reputation-management advertising.
- It never describes a claim as quick, easy or cheap, and never uses the phrase the advertising rules ban.
Corrections and takedowns
Corrections are welcome: write to hello@defamationwise.ie with the page address and the official source. If you believe a page refers to you and is inaccurate, write to the same address with the page address; the awards register carries only what the court or the press reported, with the source linked, and an entry is corrected or annotated where the public record has moved on.
