Defamation in Northern Ireland

Last updated 2026-10-09.

DefamationWise covers the Republic of Ireland only. Nothing on this site applies to a statement published in Northern Ireland or to proceedings in its courts.

Why the law is different

Northern Ireland has its own statute, the Defamation Act (Northern Ireland) 2022, its own limitation rules, its own courts and its own costs regime. The Defamation Act 2009 and the Defamation (Amendment) Act 2026, which this site explains, are Acts of the Oireachtas and apply in the Republic of Ireland. England and Wales are different again, with a serious-harm test and a one-year limit under the Defamation Act 2013.

Where to look instead

Published on both sides of the border?

A statement published online can be read in both jurisdictions. Which law applies, and where a claim can be brought, is a question for a solicitor in the jurisdiction concerned. For the Republic of Ireland, start with what defamation is in Ireland and the time-limit checker.
